Spectacle power is due to a combination of many factors. Some children have spectacle power at a young age and some have it recognised later on. Usually, this comes to attention of parents or teachers when the child finds it difficult in school. The child may need to hold objects close to see them. The child cannot see birds or trees in the distance.
Occasionally, only one eye may have a power and in that case, the condition may go undetected. Therefore it is important to have regular eye checks for children. When eye power has been detected, it is essential to use correction in the form of spectacles or, if the child is capable, contact lens.
Vision screening is performed in schools or colleges. Trained eye technicians can perform a vision screening to detect basic power. A complete eye check is performed by an eye doctor who considers not just the eye power but examines the entire eye to look for other problems that require attention.
Refractive error or simply, the need to wear glasses is because the shape of a particular eye is a little different and that prevents light from focussing well. These individuals cannot get a clear image and correction in the form of glasses or contact lenses are needed.
These errors cannot be prevented but it is necessary to identify and treat them early. In case these errors are not treated in children, there is a possibility of “lazy eye” developing.
Any refractive error, especially in a child, has to be corrected appropriately by wearing spectacles. You can discuss with your eye doctor about options like contact lenses. Refractive surgery is offered as an option after a certain age and after eye power stabilises. Most important of all, do not avoid use of spectacles as that can lead to decrease in vision.
